Grass-based farming

We are a grass-based business. That means we keep everything on pasture 24/7/365. We move egg-layers every 3-4 days and meat birds everyday to a new piece of ground so they can graze fresh grass, eat the bugs, and scratch and peck in the dirt, everything they love to do. The only time these birds are inside is when they are too small. We have 2 brooders that they stay in for about 3-4 weeks, and then they are moved to our hoop house until about 10-13 weeks (depending on weather). In both places, we use a deep bedding system where they are on thick layers of wood chips. The woodchips bind and mix with their manure, and this keeps it from stinking. We've had people come over and not even know we had hundreds of chickens; it just doesn't smell! We have learned from those who have come before us, such as Joel Salatin, Greg Judy, and many others. We've still made plenty of mistakes, but learning from them has helped us not make any big ones. We want to continue learning and growing our farm, so check in often!
